The Colt M4 is a shortened version of the M16A4 with a 14.5 inch (368 mm) long barrel and a telescopic stock. However, this includes part of the rifle's mechanism, the stock can therefore be shortened by a third of its length but cannot be completely retracted like on other assault rifles. Its other characteristics are identical to those of the M16A3 (5.56 mm NATO caliber, fire selector with safety, single shot or automatic. This weapon equips units that do not need the range of an M16, thus freeing themselves from its bulk. This is particularly the case for vehicle crews, gunners, and certain officers. The M4 was created for the account of the SOG (Special Operations Groups) and airborne troops. There were also trials of the XM177 prototype in the American airborne cavalry during the Vietnam War. The M4 is an M16 with a 6-position telescopic stock, improved flame cover, shortened barrel, handguard, and gas intake mechanism, and automatic firing. The bolt block, the sight's rear sight, the magazines are elements of the M16. the m4 has the possibility to add accessories such as a grenade launcher, a sight scope.
