The SCAR or SOF (Special Operations Forces) Combat Assault Rifle is an assault rifle developed by FN Herstal (Herstal). The SCAR was designed to meet the specific needs of the United States Special Operations Command (SOCOM), the command of the special operations of the American army, to which the XM8, which was supposed to become the standard rifle of the American army, was not suitable. SOCOM wanted a weapon that could be converted in the field to several calibers in order to offer its troops a weapon system with identical handling simplifying maintenance and logistics but nevertheless perfectly adapted to different missions. The SCAR comes in two versions, the SCAR-L (for Light) chambered in 5.56 mm NATO and the SCAR-H (for Heavy) chambered in 7.62 x 51 mm NATO. The SCAR-H may eventually be available in a version chambered for the 7.62x39 mm, the ammunition of the AK-47 and can receive its magazines. This choice aims to allow troops operating behind enemy lines to use available ammunition. It is likely that it will also be chambered for other ammunition. Each of these versions may have three variations based on the barrel length: * S: standard, barrel of normal size * CQC: Close Quarters Combat, short barrel improving maneuverability, especially useful in urban combat * SV: Sniper Variant, long barrel for precision long-range shooting
