The FAMAS (for "assault rifle from the Saint-Étienne weapon factory"), whose official name is often simplified to FAMAS, is a French assault rifle. Because of its appearance (short length and foregrip), it was nicknamed "the bugle" by some French soldiers, although this non-regulatory name has fallen into disuse. It was ordered and put into service by the French army who wanted a powerful tactical weapon with reduced clutter that was also easy to use and maintain. The FAMAS replaced the Mle 1949 and Mle 1949-56 rifles in 7.5 mm caliber.
